The end of Noir Flohay?

I don’t think so.
Noir Flohay—referring to the “skeleton trees”—well, I have no idea if those old relics will survive.
What is certain, however, is that a great many new skeleton trees will appear in a wide variety of locations.

My colleague @koendelanghe_fotogeniekbelgie posted a brief message about this on social media, which inspired me to write a new blog post. Still an inspiration after all these years 😉

Just like Koen, I believe tourism will skyrocket once the park reopens.
For now, access to the reserve and the affected zones is strictly prohibited.

Het einde van Noir Flohay?

Ik denk het niet.
Noir Flohay, als in “de skeletbomen”, geen idee of de oude relicten zullen overleven.
Zeker is wel dat er heel veel nieuwe skeletbomen zullen bij komen op heel diverse plaatsen.

Collega Koen de Langhe schreef er vandaag een kort bericht over op zijn sociale media, wat me een aanzet gaf tot dit blogbericht. Na al die jaren nog steeds een inspiratie 😉

Net als Koen denk ik dat de toerisme de pan zal uitvliegen eens het park terug geopend zal zijn.
Voorlopig blijft toegang tot het reservaat en de getroffen zones strikt verboden.

Most of what hikers see from the boardwalks in the High Fens is degraded peatland or wet heathland.
The peat layer is still present underneath the surface,
but living peat moss has largely been replaced by purple moor-grass and heather.

This dominance on dried-out ground act as the ultimate fire accelerant for the area.

The restoration and rewetting projects (blocking the drainage ditches) are specifically aimed at turning those 'sick' zones back into active raised bogs over time.

Het grootste deel dat wandelaars zien vanaf de houten knuppelpaden in de Hoge Venen is degegradneerd veen of natte heide.
De turflaag ligt er wel nog onder in de bodem,
maar aan de oppervlakte is het levende veenmos grotendeels vervangen door pijpenstrootje en struikhei.

Deze overmacht op een verdroogde grond vormt de ultieme brandversneller van het gebied.

De herstel- en vernattingsprojecten (het dichten van de grachten) zijn er juist op gericht om van die 'zieke' zones op termijn weer actief hoogveen te maken.

For years, the iconic 'skeleton trees' of the High Fens have been a magnet for photographers. But behind that eerie, photogenic beauty lies a sad truth. 📸

These pale tree skeletons are the remnants of past wildfires, exposing the real root of the problem: centuries-old drainage channels that completely destroyed the peatland's natural sponge effect. The resulting extreme dryness turns the area into a tinderbox during dry spells.

Landscape & nature photography for me is about way more than just pretty pictures—it reveals the raw reality of our landscape.
These images are a stark reminder of how vulnerable the High Fens are, and why rewetting and restoration remain so urgently needed. 🌿💧

Like @samuel_bouchoms already said, the High Fens will bounce back, even if it takes decades—but it’ll never be quite the same.

De iconische 'skeletbomen' van de Hoge Venen trekken al jaren talloze fotografen aan. Maar achter die bevreemdende, fotogenieke schoonheid schuilt een trieste waarheid. 📸

Deze bleke 'boomskeletten' zijn het relict van eerdere natuurbranden en leggen de echte oorzaak van het probleem bloot: eeuwenoude afwateringsgrachten die de sponswerking van het veen volledig hebben gesloopt. De extreme uitdroging die daardoor ontstaat, verandert het gebied bij droogte in een doos lucifers.

Landschap & natuurfotografie draait voor mij om meer dan mooie plaatjes; het toont de rauwe realiteit van ons landschap.
Deze beelden herinneren ons eraan hoe kwetsbaar de Hoge Venen zijn én waarom vernatting en herstel zo dringend nodig blijven. 🌿💧

Felt like those first days of photography when I purchased a 70-300 and came home with 2000 images, mostly of only one bird..

Only 5 of those where actually good.

Lucky, I improved by now and my succes rate is a bit higher 😅

In my early years as a photographer, I shot primar

In my early years as a photographer, I shot primarily in black and white.
An image devoid of color, where you are guided mainly by contrasts, presented an extra challenge for me, yet it also often brought a certain sense of calm.
Calmness within the photo, but also a sense of peace while shooting.

Over the years, my landscape photography changed drastically,
influenced by the commercial side of the craft.
After all, travel agencies and communications firms generally want to see color.

This year, I decided to go back to shooting all my family photos in black and white, and that approach is starting to filter through into my landscape and nature work as well.

In mijn beginjaren als fotograaf, fotografeerde ik voornamelijk zwart wit.
Een beeld zonder kleur, waar je voornamelijk geleid wordt door contrasten, betekende voor mij een extra challenge, maar het bracht me ook vaak een zekere rust.
Rust in het beeld, maar ook rust tijdens de opname.

Door de jaren heen veranderde mijn landschapsfotografie drastisch, beïnvloed door de commerciële kant van fotografie.
Reis- en communicatiebureaus willen namelijk vooral kleur zien.

Dit jaar besliste ik om al mijn familiefoto's terug in het zwart wit te fotograferen. Hier en daar begint dit ook terug door te sijpelen naar mijn landschap/natuur werk.

Honored that a second image was shortlisted for the World Food Photography Awards 2026, alongside my winning portrait.

A moment of quiet determination. A young miller at the Irebero Vocational Training Center, standing tall in the play of light. This project, founded by Zilipa Nyirabyago (Moulins du Nil Blanc), transforms lives by teaching single mothers / widows to become skilled millers, building independence and hope.

Grateful to share this story. 🇧🇪🏆

🏆 1st PRIZE at the @foodphotoaward 2026! 📸

Great news: my photo 'Irebero Miller' has won in the international category Politics of Food! Out of thousands of entries worldwide, this is incredible recognition.

The image tells the story of the Vocational Training Center Irebero in Rwanda, a fantastic project founded by Zilipa Nyirabyago. Through Moulins du Nil Blanc, Zilipa offers a safe place and a new future to vulnerable, single mothers by training them to become professional millers.

With this photo, I wanted to capture the resilience of these women. It shows how food production can be the key to independence, women's rights, and breaking the cycle of poverty.

It is wonderful that this story is now getting a global platform.

The photo is currently on display live at the Mall Galleries in London!

became part of my professional work kit.

From bright city workshops, to dark churches during a class exchange abroad.

I also visited De Blankaart two days to fully test the new features of this camera.

I tried this new Laowa lens 📸

Laowa 180mm f4.5 has a 1.5 magnification factor but also has something called Dual Focus Mode.
With a 2 second button press, you acitvate an AF assist right into macro shooting.
Allowing you to use autofocus even when you are in manual focus.
Ideal for these fast moving objects or windy situations.

Ik heb deze nieuwe Laowa-lens uitgeprobeerd.📸

De Laowa 180mm f4.5 heeft een 1,5 vergrotingsfactor, maar beschikt ook over een zogenaamde Dual Focus-modus.

Met een druk op de knop van 2 seconden activeer je een autofocus-assistent, direct tijdens het macro-opnemen.

Hierdoor kun je autofocus gebruiken, zelfs als je handmatig scherpstelt.

Ideaal voor snel bewegende objecten of winderige omstandigheden.

Boshyacintenfestival was a great succes!

The goal of the festival was to allow people, to enjoy blue bells and unique nature in a cross-border way.
Just like nature, because nature knows no borders.

Besides different hikes, there where lots of activites to keep families entertained and educated.

With both Yann 🇫🇷 and @boswachter.erwin 🇧🇪 sharing their knowledge about this wonderful area.

Het Boshyacintenfestival was een groot succes!

Het doel van het festival was om mensen te laten genieten van de boshyacinten en de unieke natuur op een grensoverschrijdende manier.

Net als de natuur zelf, want de natuur kent namelijk geen grenzen.

Naast verschillende wandelingen waren er tal van activiteiten om gezinnen te vermaken en iets bij te leren.

Met Yann 🇫🇷 en Erwin 🇧🇪 die hun kennis over dit prachtige gebied deelden.

New observation tower in @loreninge8647! 🏰

From Friday, May 1st, the new viewpoint in the tower of St. Peter's Church is open to the public. Enjoy a 360° panoramic view of the landscape and the polders! The project is part of the Interreg project Clim@TouVert, for which I had the opportunity to photograph the projects of @eutopia.interreg over the past year.

Nieuwe uitkijktoren in @loreninge8647 ! 🏰

𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗳 𝘃𝗿𝗶𝗷𝗱𝗮𝗴 𝟭 𝗺𝗲𝗶 is het nieuwe uitkijkpunt in de toren van de Sint-Pieterskerk open voor het publiek.

Geniet van een 360° panoramisch uitzicht over het landschap en de polders!

Het project kadert in het Interreg project Clim@TouVert, waarvoor ik het voorbije jaar de projecten van @eutopia.interreg in beeld mocht brengen.
