CLOSING THE CIRCLE (2023)

Closing the circle is een fotoreeks over circulaire landbouw, waarbij uit afval nieuwe producten worden gemaakt.

In de regio Kivu halen koffieboeren hun inkomen slechts één keer per jaar uit koffie, namelijk wanneer de bonen rijp zijn.
Na het wassen blijven er tonnen koffiebespulp en ander afval over. Hier houdt de koffieketen normaal gesproken op.

Moulins du Nil Blanc stelt kleine Rwandese koffieproducenten in staat om het hele jaar door een inkomen te genereren,
en niet alleen tijdens de oogst van de koffiebessen.

Dit gebeurt door landbouwafval te recyclen – waaronder koffiepulp van wasstations in Rubavu, houtafval en katoenafval
– en daarmee gevarieerde, smakelijke, voedzame en milieuvriendelijke oesterzwammen te kweken.

In een ‘zero-waste’-systeem worden het gebruikte substraat van de paddenstoelen en plantaardig afval gerecycled
tot biologische meststof. Deze meststof kan worden gebruikt voor nieuwe of bestaande koffieplanten,
waardoor er sprake is van kringlooplandbouw die de koffieketen sluit.

“Closing the Circle” is a photo series about circular agriculture, a process in which new products are created from waste.

In the Kivu region, coffee farmers derive income from coffee only once a year—when the beans are ripe.
After washing, tons of coffee cherry pulp and other waste remain; typically, this is where the coffee supply chain ends.

Moulins du Nil Blanc enables small-scale Rwandan coffee producers to generate income year-round,
rather than solely during the coffee cherry harvest.

This is achieved by recycling agricultural waste—including coffee pulp from washing stations in Rubavu,
wood waste, and cotton waste. This to cultivate oyster mushrooms that are diverse, tasty, nutritious, and eco-friendly.

In a “zero-waste” system, the mushroom substrate and plant waste are recycled into organic fertilizer.
This fertilizer can be used for new or existing coffee plants, creating a circular agricultural model that closes the loop in the coffee supply chain.
